As The World Falls Down

This is from the soundtrack of Labyrinth, 1986. Labyrinth is a cult classic among children’s fantasy movies from the 80s. It’s definitely the best thing to spring from the workshop of director Jim Henson (sorry, not a Muppet fan). It was the last movie Henson directed. The screenplay is cowritten by Terry Jones. It features a young Jennifer Connelly in one of her first roles. And most importantly, it is the film that introduced a generation of impressionable children to David Bowie.

Bowie wrote several songs for the movie, and As The World Falls Down was supposed to come out as a single. There was even a video filmed, seen below. However, the film did not do well financially, and critics didn’t like the songs. It’s silly to criticize Bowie for not bringing his A material to a children’s movie sountrack album. Of course some of the songs are a little dumb – it’s a kid’s movie! R emember, also, that it was 1986, and db wasn’t really bringing his A game to anything. This song is one of the standouts. Below we have the full sequence from the movie. It’s one of my favorite scenes, because it introduces real sexual tension into the movie. It shows a different, grown-up side of goblin world. Legions of fans agree, it would have been better if Sarah had decided to marry the goblin king. Some people are of the opinion that Bowie’s wig looks ridiculous. I think he looks hot throughout, despite the ridiculous wig, and wears a variety of fabulous costumes. The jewel-encrusted evening attire here, I think is amazing, sexy and romantic. I also love the assymetrical leather jacket shown earlier in the movie. Oh and how exciting are those tight pants? For many of us, a first encounter with hot older men wearing tights.
