Last year I didn’t put Arcade Fire’s Everything Now on my list of favorites, although it’s a record I suspect I’ll still be listening to for years to come. It just felt as if Arcade Fire had fallen into the common trap of not being quite as clever as they think they are. They’re as funky as ever, of course, as baroque in their production, as tuneful in their melodies, as sincere and as earnest. Oh gawd, how earnest. I don’t really feel like being told by a rock star in a shiny gold suit that the ‘cool kids’ are really leading meaningless lives. Yes, materialism is meaningless, status symbols are meaningless, social media is an endless void of false validation and suburbia is a cultural desert. You made those points several albums ago. Tell me something inspiring.
