Would you guess that Sylvan Esso is one of the best and best-known electropop duos? Well, you wouldn’t guess it by their name, which sounds like an expensive cappuccino boutique (no coincidental association given that their biggest hit is a song about drinking coffee.) Nor would you guess it by the appearance of singer Amelia Meath, who is shockingly normal-looking, unpretentious and dabbles in Appalachian folk music when she’s not playing the EDM circuit. But of course, an Appalachian folk music sensibility is exactly what the EDM circuit needs. It needs the touch of someone who is steeped in tradition and has the vocal talents to go full a capella. Those unexpected qualities is what gives Sylvan Esso’s music its warmth and intimacy, the thing that sets it apart in a field of aspiring dance-floor divas and wood sprites.
