We’re stepping forward, finally, to another letter of the alphabet. Coincidentally, it was also a Zap Mama song that launched us, almost seven years ago, when I made Abadou my debut post. Obviously, I’ve come a long way since then, on many levels. But still, as then, what better way to start a new chapter than taking a moment to focus on what Marie Daulne calls “the original instrument.” Zap Mama’s music has evolved, but continues to be an exploration and celebration of the human voice, the primary and most basic unit of musical creativity. As Zap Mama shows, it’s really the only necessary instrument. No accompaniment is needed to create musical works of incredible complexity, just an interaction of voices. It’s the essence of simplicity and complexity at once.
