Here’s another example of an act who loses absolutely nothing in getting old. Nobody cares about Becker and Fagen losing their looks, and musicianship only ripens with age. The only thing standing between groups like Steely Dan and a career of eternal popularity is that, eventually, everyone’s cultural moment must pass. In the 70’s Steely Dan were the undisputed kings of jazz-inflected soft rock, which was a commercially viable thing to be. Now that genre is the stuff of punchlines and Steely Dan are the kings of ‘stuff your dad still listens to because everything else hurts his tinnitus.’ Perhaps it’s not so bleak though; jazz-inflected soft rock may never be popular again, but I’m surprised by how many people in my age group list Steely Dan as one of their favorites. At least one or two!
