Unbeknownst to me, Demis Roussos died in January of this year. Somehow, the life and death of a Greek pop singer who had been briefly popular throughout Europe in the early 1970’a does not make big news in this time and place. Roussos died at age 68, of causes unknown to me but probably related to his longtime struggles with obesity and depression. Although today his legacy might not be cherished outside of his homeland, he was at one time one Greece’s biggest stars, known for his work as a member of Aphrodite’s Child and solo hits such as this one. Audiences in the here and now might not know what to do with a pop sound so heavy on bouzoukis, but there’s no denying Roussos had an unforgettable voice. May he rest in peace.
