This makes me melt and always will (even though Bryan Ferry is the poster boy for stiff white guy dancing.) The art snob in me wants to embrace the early Roxy Music albums in all their mad eccentric glory – and I do, very very much – but in the sentimental end, it’s Avalon that I come back to as the height of Roxy Music. Yes, it’s their most commercial and successful record, as if that were a bad thing. And yes, it’s true that after discovering the magic formula, Bryan Ferry never strayed far from it again. But if the formula is now as overworn as last season’s tuxedo, it’s for good reason. A more perfect work of art was never made. Everything about it is classic, from the falcon on the cover to final notes of Tara.
