Monster/Suicide/America

This should have been a huge hit for Steppenwolf, especially if trimmed down to just the final third. Alas, it wasn’t, and Steppenwolf went on to only be remembered for that one song about being wild. Maybe the American market wasn’t ready for a hard rock anthem of political criticism by Canadian group with a German lead singer. Highbrow choice of name aside, there’s not much intellectual finesse to Steppenwolf. They were a pretty typical late 60’s hard rock band, and clunky social commentary was rather the vogue right then. Maybe the market was oversaturated with well meaning hard rock anthems.
