Marianne Faithfull and the songbook of Kurt Weill are the perfect match. Faithfull was born to interpret those songs. Faithfull’s discography is sizable and full of gems, but I think 20th Century Blues is one of her most important albums. It really coalesced everything for Faithfull and perfected the image she’d been moving towards since her comeback (or all her life, really.) It’s glamorous dark cabaret, perfect rainy day music, music for and about people who’ve lived too much or those who aspire to.
