Jimmy Cliff has lately been enjoying a much deserved revival, including high profile festival gigs and a series of inexplicable but funny Volkswagen commercials. As one of the first internationally known reggae stars, he has certainly earned his legend. This song is one of his signature numbers, showcasing a soulful vocal performance. You can really hear the influence of American gospel music in the arrangement and in Cliff’s delivery. Originally released in 1969 on the album Jimmy Cliff, it’s best known as part of the soundtrack to The Harder They Come. That film was both Cliff’s big breakthrough and the breakthrough of reggae music outside Jamaica. The song has been covered by UB40, Cher, Annie Lennox and Harry Nilsson, among others.
