A great underrated track, from an underrated album. Manifesto the album wasn’t all great, but it had moments of greatness, including the title track. It was an uneven album, with several tracks (Angel Eyes, Dance Away, Ain’t That So) having the slick sophisticated groove that Avalon would soon perfect. (Bryan Ferry has been riding that groove ever since.) Others, such as this, are more reminiscent of the flamboyantly weird Roxy Music of yore. And a few were just snoozers. I think this one stands out because of Ferry’s uncharacteristically forceful vocal performance. He’s very much an artist who likes to stay in his comfort zone (the latest exhibit: his new album) and that includes his usual dreamy croon.
