And now for some Rai music from Algerian duo Fadela & Sahraoui. Cheb Sahraoui and Chaba Fadela were a married duo who started recording in the early nineties. They emigrated from Algeria to France around that time and are still based there. They have since separated and now have solo careers. Fadela Zalmat began her musical career as a teenager in the 1970s. According to her Wikipedia page, she was the first woman to defy the ban on women singing in clubs in Algeria. Mohammed Sahraoui also began his career in the ’70s, and is known as one of the first Rai singers to tour the United States. The names Cheb and Chaba are traditional honorifics given to singers of Rai.
