Marianne Faithfull would know a lot about the feeling of losing. She’s lost a lot, and she’s been lost. She eventually came out a winner, unlike many others who venture where she did. But all those hard lesson and regret are something that’s informed her work. Her music is not meant for a light afternoon’s frolic. It’s stating the obvious to say Faithfull is one of the more depressing artists. Though she is, of course, a huge inspiration, she often cuts far too close to the bone. That feeling of fighting hard and losing, for instance. When you sense the threads of your life sliding from your grasp and you’re not quite sure how to knit them all back. No one does a slow glide along the edge of despair quite like Marianne Faithfull.
