When not looking for satellites… David Bowie is always searching for something. Enlightenment, perhaps? Or the way back to his home planet? On Reality, he was dealing with just that, or rather, as he put it, the ambiguity thereof. I recall him making some statement about how in modern times, reality seems less real. I’m not old enough to make a judgement on whether or not reality itself erodes over time, but I suspect that it’s always been a tricky thing. It’s certainly something David Bowie has grappled with for a long time. This song is, not surprisingly, another chapter in that grapple, though the specifics elude me. The line “Baby, dumb is forever” sticks with me, though. Nothing cryptic about that.
