Mariska Veres sings about loneliness a lot. She sings a lot about breakups and broken hearts. Her voice is so strong and Shocking Blue’s music so driving, that at first you may not notice how much their lyrics return to the barren places of the heart. That doesn’t make it depressing, though. There’s a roll-with-the-punches attitude that feels empowering, a sense that bad bullshit is just pesky dirt that strong ladies just have to go on kicking aside. Not much is known about Mariska Veres; she was a private person even at the height of success, and she slipped into obscurity without much of a fight. I wonder who she was, why she was drawn to this kind of material, how much of it was just given to her and how much of herself was in it.
