Guzophela

If you happen to speak Zulu, tell me what this song says. I’ve been told it’s about Apartheid. I’ve also been told that Marie Daulne pronunciation is terrible, and the titled is misspelled. It should be ‘Kuzophela’ according at least to commenters on YouTube. If I was a Zulu speaker I might get wound up about who spells and pronounces what how, but as it is, all I care about is the beauty of Zap Mama’s vocals. Zap Mama has changed a lot over the years; personnel has changed, instruments and influences have been added. Marie Daulne’s voice is still magnificent, but nothing can compare to the way the a cappella first album showcased it. On the first album it was only the voices that provided melody and rhythm, weaving in and out together, creating such texture that instruments weren’t even missed. But I suppose such simplicity can only go so far before new things need to be explored.
