The Chauffeur

Duran Duran may not have offered the world much in the way of relevant political commentary, soul baring emotion or literary smarts, but as we can see above, they could be counted on for one thing – impeccable style. The fashions haven’t aged well – the words ‘timeless’ and ‘classic’ somehow don’t spring to mind. Just in this picture I see three Miami Vice suits, blue satin pants, a biker jacket (worn with satin pants), a suit and sweatband combo, a man in lipstick (manstick?) and enough hairspray for a Miss America pageant. These boys thought hard about their image. Besides being well-heeled in person, Duran Duran always provided stylish videos. Contrary to how they may appear at first glance, it so happens they were not gay. In fact, they had quite an eye for comely females (especially Simon).  The videos always starred the hottest models in the most revealing of the latest fashions. Some may even venture to say that a few of their videos are, how you call it? gratuitously sexy. The Chauffeur video, directed by Ian Emes, is not gratuitously sexy in the least. It merely features two lingerie clad women who enjoy an only vaguely Sapphic encounter in a parking garage while the female driver dances topless. That’s tastefully risque, not kinky, gratuitous, or in any way at all dreamed up after a sweaty perusal of a Helmut Newton fetish calender.
