Japan

So this is where the ‘racist’ rumours sprouted up from. We don’t hear about it very much here in the US, because here we don’t care very much about an English person’s opinions about English immigration problems. Across the pond, however, it’s been a big controversy for years. Very early in his career, Mozface wrote a series of well-intentioned but boneheaded songs about new Asian immigrants and skinheads, including this one, Bengali In Platforms and National Front Disco, which were misinterpreted and taken as a sign of bigotry on his part. (It was boneheaded to even touch the topic at all.) Adding to that a lifelong interest in the uncouth elements of society, including thugs and skins, and a joke (dated circa the early 80′s) that “Reggae is vile”, and wearing a Union Jack once during a concert; rather slim evidence all in all, but Morrissey does tend to rub some people the wrong way, and those people do find excuses to hate him. Anyway, he’s still trying to atone for it, decades later, to the tune of thousands of £ donated to appropriate orginazations. Either way, he’s lucky he didn’t write Brown Sugar.

BTW…What I wrote last week about Moz possibly collaborating with Stella McCartney is most likely just an ugly rumour. I, for one, am relieved. I’m glad Moz has the dignity not to be a little sales whore like so many others who sell their names for a quick buck.

“Oh Asian boy – what drugs are you on?”

Day oh so late
strangely the sun still shone
oh Asian boy
what are you on?
Day oh so late
strangely the sun still shone
oh Asian boy
what drugs are you on?
Tooled-up Asian boy
has come to take revenge
for the cruel, cold killing
of his very best friend
Tooled-up Asian boy
has come to avenge
the cruel, cold killing
of his only friend
There’s peace through our school
it’s so quiet in the hall
it’s a strange sign for one
of what’s to come
Tough and cold and pale
oh they may just impale you on railings

oh English boys
it must be wrong
three against one?
Brakes slammed, and
his gun jammed, and
as far as I could tell
brave Asian boy
was dealt a blow and fell
I’m just passing through here
on my way to somewhere civilised
and maybe I’ll even arrive
maybe I’ll even arrive?

Buffalo Ballet

Pretty rare footage, here. For some reason cameras did not follow John Cale wherever he went. Why the heck not?

When Abilene was young and gay
And thunder storms filled up the day
The cattle roamed outside the town

Sleeping in the midday sun
Sleeping in the midday sun
Sleeping in the midday sun
Sleeping in the midday sun

Then tracks were lain across the plain
By broken old men in torrid rains
The towns grew up and the people were still

Sleeping in the midday sun
Sleeping in the midday sun
Sleeping in the midday sun
Sleeping in the midday sun

We all joined in and all joined hands
All joined in to help run this land
Then soldiers came, long long ago
Rode through the town and rode down those who were

Sleeping in the midday sun
Sleeping in the midday sun
Sleeping in the midday sun
Sleeping in the midday sun

Gold came and went, quickly spent
And the people broke down and often drowned
In the wealth and pain of old Abilene

Sleeping in the midday sun
Sleeping in the midday sun
Sleeping in the midday sun
Sleeping in the midday sun
