Model of the Week:Lara Stone

This month W has anointed Lara Stone the newest ‘it’ model. Of course I’m happy to see a model on the cover of a magazine. W has always been bolder and more artistic that the competition. I like Lara: she’s not quite conventionally pretty, what with the jacked-up teeth and bleachy-looking eyebrows, but she has a feral sexuality that makes her stand out. However, the accompanying story is laughable. To call Lara Stone bigger, healthier or more womanly than other models is wishful thinking. It actually says that she ‘has some meat on her bones’. Where is all this meat, exactly? Lara’s a very fine model, but in no way is she  more curvacous than any of the other girls. This is Lara’s second W cover. She shared the July 2008 cover with Kate Moss and Daria Werbowy.

BTW. You may be wondering about my fetish for fashion models. I don’t know what it is, I just find them fascinating. I am majorly obsessed. I think maybe it’s because unlike movie stars, who are sickeningly overexposed in every way, models have some mystery. They are easy to project fantasies onto – that’s their job. Anyway, stay tuned for more model updates.

Big Space

I’m not sure why Days Of Open Hand, Suzanne Vega’s third album is so obscure. Released in 1990, it is a Grammy winner (for best Record Packaging, whatever that means). Sadly, none of the songs were hits, and the album sank from public view. It’s been unfairly forgotten, because it’s a great, dreamy album with some wonderful lyrics.
