I’m a biased audience, because I love everything Bowie does, so don’t trust me, but I think Heathen is a great album. It’s a little bit dark, and a little bit noisy, but it’s very reflective and thoughtful. One common criticism of Bowie’s recent work is that he’s been neglecting melody in favor of loud guitars. That’s a valid point. From Outside in 1995 to Heathen in 2002 Bowie has been exploring rave, techno, jungle and other murky influences. I can understand that such styles have been somewhat alienating to his older fans. It is not, however, alienating to me. I would also like to point out that Heathen is his strongest cover image since ‘Heroes’.
