Bells Ring

Bells Ring, Mazzy Star, So Tonight That I Might See, 1993

My interest in Mazzy Star began with an unsolicited CD of the month from BMG Music Service. Usually, BMG’s crappy monthly selections are sent back unopened. Yet that one time, who know why, it was not only opened, but played. I was floored. Mazzy Star is one of innumerable bands influenced by the Velvet Underground. Mazzy Star is different from all the others because they seem to be influenced only by one particular Velvet Underground song – All Tomorrow’s parties.  Throughout their career they’ve been repeating the formula, a blend of melody and edge. There are raw, droning guitars spelling punkness. Then there is the singer, a beautiful woman with a voice like heroin. The effect is hypnotic and just slightly disturbing.
